The Challenges of the Divorce Process
(used by permission of the author, Dr. Reena Sommer)
There are a number of challenges facing people going through the divorce process. The most difficult challenge facing many spouses is dealing with the other spouse's announcement that he or she wants out of the marriage. This is particularly difficult when this comes as a surprise or when the decision to divorce is not shared. The difficulty here is there isn't a lot of room to move. In most western countries, the provision of a "no fault" divorce simply means that the decision to divorce is sufficient. Not wanting to divorce or contesting the divorce per se, doesn't really matter in the end.
And even when a divorce is anticipated and/or when a couple is in agreement, there are still other issues that can give rise to stress and upset. These other divorce issues generally fall into two categories: money and children.
When a divorcing couple has children, it is not uncommon to find hotly contested issues about money and children. Sometimes, the focus seems to be on children or in other cases, the focus seems to be on money. But make no mistake, in most cases, custody battles have more to do with money than with the "best interests of children".
There is much to know about the divorce process and getting help with coping with divorce. The good news is that there is considerable information about getting divorced and lots of available divorce resources. The important thing is to find reliable divorce information and resources. Using the divorce resources on the internet is a good starting point.
